cashmere bounty!

art yarnsIn the wake of our recent Artyarns party, we have many new colors in the shop. The volume of purchases made through the party allowed us to bring in a few skeins here and there of colors we have not previously carried.

Come in and check them out--they are worth the trip!

Also, if you saw a pattern at the trunk show that you liked, we probably have it in stock now. We have a binder devoted exclusively to our Artyarns single sheet patterns.

time is running out!

little mittensLet's make this quick. You need gifts, we have gifts, gift ideas, supplies, advice, and the most important thing of all, knitting support!

Time to check a few things off your holiday to-do list. Shall we?

1. Gift Certificates. They seem basic, but they are always a hit with knitters. We carry them in many denominations, or we can combine some to get you the perfect amount. This is the perfect gift for you to give your knitting friends or the perfect hint to drop to your children or partner.

2. Sue's Seed Stitch Washcloths. Say it with me: "no more apple themed coffee mugs!" Sue is our resident teacher, and she has designed the perfect alternative to the glass apple paperweight. A chic pair of washcloths paired with a pretty soap make a fabulous present that is low calorie and never needs to be dusted. This is also a fabulous hostess gift when you pair the cloths with a bottle of your favorite bubbly. Come in and get the pattern free with purchase of yarn.

3. Little Mittens. Didn't get to knit for everyone on your list? Maybe you still can. Come in and buy a single skein of fingering weight yarn and turn out a few pair of these cute mitten ornaments. They are a great tree ornament, gift tag, or even thoughtful little gift for the members of your office or your child's teacher. Get the pattern from Pink Argyle.

4. Last-Minute Knitted Gifts. The book is the perfect gift for a knitter, and the projects inside have the potential to round out your entire list: bulky scarves, fast hats, baby bootees, and great ideas for yarn gift decor like pom-poms and tassels.

5. Chic & Cheap Gift Wrap. Try this for a fun way to wrap handmade gifts. Wrap the present in brown butcher paper, parchment, or interesting newspaper like the funnies or pages from local foreign language weekly. Then tie the package shut with a few yards of pretty yarn from your stash. You can add tassels, pom-poms, felted flowers, and i-cord bows to top off your pretty package!

grab your needles!

knittyOne of the great joys of knitting is finding the perfect yarn for your project. At Knit+Stitch we pride ourselves on our wide selection of yarns as well as a staff well versed in substituting yarns. Substituting is a great way to customize your knitting and make it truly individual.

There are times however when you want to use the yarn the designer used for the project. You may love the color the sample was knit in or you may be trying a new technique and want to experiment using the yarn suggested. Sometimes you may simply want your knitting to be low maintenance. "Cascade 220? Show me the colors!"

With holiday knitting wrapping up (both literally and figuratively!) it is time to knit something for yourself, and i am pleased to report that the new Knitty* is stuffed full of projects you will want to knit and keep all to yourself. Additionally, six of the designs are knit in yarns we have sitting on our selves right now.

Sweaters

Knitty offers all patterns for free, but these free patterns are not your typical poorly written freebies you find on the web. The two sweaters I am featuring here were designed by respected professional designers

Amused is a completely seamless cabled pullover with a distinctive modern flair. Knitting bag designer (and budding knitwear designer!) Jordana Paige designed this sweater to be knit in Karabella's Merino Superwash, one of our favorites!

Surface is a stunningly textured cardigan with an optional wrap that can be knit separately and attached. This sweater was designed by the much-loved Berroco's Design Director Norah Gaughan. Surface continues Norah's exploration of texture and layers. The sample was knit in one of our newer yarns Berroco Pure Merino DK.

Come is feel these beautiful yarns and pick your color. If we do not have a sweater quantity of your selection in stock, we will be happy to order a bag of these beautiful yarns just for you!

Accessories
Want to try some cables or lace? need another hat or scarf? Come on in, we have what you need!

Gwynedd
is a lavishly cabled wide scarf knit in one of our absolute favorite yarns--Berroco Ultra Alpaca! This yarn combines the long wear and good value of a workhorse and the luxury of beautiful colors in a soft alpaca blend. As a shop, we love this yarn so much that more than half the employees have knit themselves a sweater from it, and anytime we are recommending a yarn for scarves or hats you hear a chorus of "What about Ultra Alpaca?".

Fern Glade
is an elegant textured lace beret that is offered in two levels of "slouchiness". Knit it less slouchy for a warm and chic topper. Knit it with more slouch for your inner fashionista. This versatile hat is knit in RYC Silk Wool DK, a beautful silk and wool blend with a fabulous sheen.

Old Faithful
Let's go out on a limb with our knitting but keep the yarn safe, familiar, and inexpensive. Two fascinating projects in the current Knitty have unusual construction and are knit in our old pal Cascade 220.

Larus + Ardea
are fingerless handwarmers knit in sizes for both men nd women using a traditional Swedish knitting technique called "Tvåändsstickning" or "twined knitting" or "two end knitting". Check out the pattern to learn more about this fascinating technique.

Finally! Perhaps the silliest but most fun project of the issue, also knit in Cascade 220 is Oomingmacks, a pair of felted and embellished slippers in the shape of a musk ox! Why the musk ox? They are near and dear to the heart of many knitters for their fiber gifts--the luxurious qiviut spun into fine yarn. These slippers don't produce qiviut, but they are awfully fun and have a very interesting construction that combines a felted slipper and other yarn embellishments.

*If you choose to knit any patterns from Knitty.com, please print a copy of the pattern before you come in to buy your yarn. We are not permitted to print a copy for you in the shop, per the legal copyright of Knitty.com. If you have questions about this policy, you should visit the page on the Knitty website devoted to copyright and local yarn stores. You can find it here. We love Knitty and Knitty loves yarn shops, but they must protect their designers. Thank you for your understanding!

speaking of Art Yarns....

mitered scarfWe received a big shipment from Artyarns yesterday, and boy are the goodies exciting! Here they are in order of excitement.

5. Yarn. You know it is a good shipment when the least exciting thing is new yarn. These new treats are delightful! We ordered new colors of the ever-popular hand dyed Cashmere and Beaded Silk. In addition we now have Glitter Silk and Glitter Silk Mohair. Both are perfect for quick holiday gifts that will be cherished for years to come.

4. Patterns. Speaking of quick gifts! We have many new patterns for Artyarns, and several of them make beautiful scarves using only one or two skeins of these luxurious fibers. Whatever your knitting taste, there is a pattern for it... tanks, jackets, scarves, shawls, hats--you name it! Also there are many techniques to choose from: lace, cables, modular knits, and crochet.

crochet scarf 3. Kits. We now offer stunning kits to make two of Artyarns most attractive and versatile designs. These are high end kits containing the finest hand dyed yarns in quantities appropriate for each design as well as the pattern and other instructions needed to complete the design. By packaging the yarn in the quantities needed to complete the design, rather than full skeins, Artyarns is providing kits that make true luxury more affordable.

First we have a treat for crocheters, the Kaleidoscope Scarf. This design is crocheted in multicolored motifs using 11 shades of cashmere. You can create this design in either Pastel Tones or Jewel Tones

silk mohairWe also have a treat for the knitters among us, the Silk Mohair Shawl/Blanket. This design is knit in 10 shades of Silk Mohair and is available in 4 color ranges appropriate to any taste: Blues, Roses, Colors, and Naturals.

2. Sock yarn. This yarn is so good that it could not simply be lumped in with the other new yarns. This is sock yarn made of... Cashmere! This beautiful new sock yarn is 67% Cashmere, with 25% Wool, and 8% Nylon for strength and durability. The yarn construction s 2 plys of cashmere twisted with a single ply of superwash wool and nylon blend. This construction makes the yarn both durable and washable. I know. We have a hard time believing it too, but it is true.

1. Party! Okay. So I lied to you. The party didn't come in the box with the Artyarns, but it is coming right up on Sunday November 23rd from 11am to 1pm. Stop in to see the beautiful yarns and stick around for holiday gift inspiration.
