time is running out!

little mittensLet's make this quick. You need gifts, we have gifts, gift ideas, supplies, advice, and the most important thing of all, knitting support!

Time to check a few things off your holiday to-do list. Shall we?

1. Gift Certificates. They seem basic, but they are always a hit with knitters. We carry them in many denominations, or we can combine some to get you the perfect amount. This is the perfect gift for you to give your knitting friends or the perfect hint to drop to your children or partner.

2. Sue's Seed Stitch Washcloths. Say it with me: "no more apple themed coffee mugs!" Sue is our resident teacher, and she has designed the perfect alternative to the glass apple paperweight. A chic pair of washcloths paired with a pretty soap make a fabulous present that is low calorie and never needs to be dusted. This is also a fabulous hostess gift when you pair the cloths with a bottle of your favorite bubbly. Come in and get the pattern free with purchase of yarn.

3. Little Mittens. Didn't get to knit for everyone on your list? Maybe you still can. Come in and buy a single skein of fingering weight yarn and turn out a few pair of these cute mitten ornaments. They are a great tree ornament, gift tag, or even thoughtful little gift for the members of your office or your child's teacher. Get the pattern from Pink Argyle.

4. Last-Minute Knitted Gifts. The book is the perfect gift for a knitter, and the projects inside have the potential to round out your entire list: bulky scarves, fast hats, baby bootees, and great ideas for yarn gift decor like pom-poms and tassels.

5. Chic & Cheap Gift Wrap. Try this for a fun way to wrap handmade gifts. Wrap the present in brown butcher paper, parchment, or interesting newspaper like the funnies or pages from local foreign language weekly. Then tie the package shut with a few yards of pretty yarn from your stash. You can add tassels, pom-poms, felted flowers, and i-cord bows to top off your pretty package!

fiber, food and friends.

what: Art Yarns Party

when: Sunday November 23, 2008. 11am-1pm

where: Knit + Stitch = Bliss, 4706 Bethesda Ave

hosted by the K+S=B Queen Bee, Lyn and our Art Yarns vendor, Rifka.

art yarnsEveryone loves pretty little treats, and that is exactly what Art Yarns are! While we would love to pack our shelves with nothing but hand dyed cashmere and silk (with beads too!) we simply can't begin to offer the full range of stunning fibers the Art Yarns team has designed.

This party is an elegant solution to this dilemma--Rifka will bring the full range of Art Yarns into the shop so you can see every fiber and all of the colors in samples larger than a few strands stuck on a card. You can also touch all the delightful fuzzies and silkies, something you can never do on a computer screen! You can then place your order with confidence, knowing exactly what to expect when your special order arrives.

As a bonus, you will receive 10% off of your Art Yarns order if you order the day of the party!

There will also be patterns and books that match the yarns to provide inspiration for your projects. IN addition to Art Yarns, we will have holiday gift knitting samples in the shop to give you ideas for your gift list.

Add light refreshments and good company, and you have a fine way to spend a Sunday afternoon--bring your knitting needles and get into the spirit! We hope you will join us! Please call the shop so we can get a head count and provide an appropriate quantity of refreshments: 301-652-7194

They are great for all ages. Sue has knit them for her nieces and nephews, and I made a set for my grandmother. They also make an excellent hostess gift when you attend holiday get togethers.

start thinking gifts!

manos hatsIt is that time of year when we turn our needlework focus to gifts (Some of you may note I have been focused that way for many weeks now!) and finding that perfect something to create for our loved ones. Scarves always seem to take front and center, but I would like to suggest an alternative to yards of repetitive stitching--the hat!

Hats are a great alternative to scarves. They usually take less yarn, and the skills involved in creating one are very easy to master. Like scarves, there are a multitude of design possibilities to suit every taste and work well as gifts for both men and women.

Pictured here we have three store models that you can see in person when you visit the shop. Above we have both a knit and crocheted hat in Manos del Uruguay. both hats can be worked in a single skein of yarn, making them great gifts under $20 that you can complete in a few evenings in front of the television.

lace edged hatIf you are looking for something more challenging, why not go for a hat with a cable or a lace edged border as pictured here in our Frog Tree Merino. This hat only took one skein of yarn, which makes it a fantastic value at under $10!

Want something a little bigger for extra special people? Maybe a hat and scarf set is the way to go. Pick two designs you like and do them in the same yarn. Or pick a pattern for a set and work them in complimentary color combinations. The options are endless.
